contentment

There was one story when I learnt English. Therefore, it was interested in my life. I am going to share to get knowledge from it. Once upon a time, a dog was crossing a small bridge. He had a piece of meat in his mouth. He looked into the water. He thought that he saw another dog with a larger piece of meat in its mouth there. He jumped into the water and dropped his piece of meat in order to get the other dog’s meat.
Of course, there was no other dog in the water. It was only his reflection which he saw in the water. But in this way he lost his piece of meat.
How did you feel after reading this story?  What did you get from it? When you read article or whatever, you have to learn from it.  I think that the dog lost his piece of meat due to craving. The dog does not have contentment. But you can say that he is an animal how to know contentment. Do you know what contentment is? It is a clear that when a person thinks: this much is enough for me and for my family and I do not want anything beyond that. It is called “Contentment”. It doesn’t matter. I want you to know is that we are all human beings. So, we can say sometime we are higher than animal aren’t we?  Anyway, should anybody ask why we cannot be satisfied in our lives although we have more than enough things, what would be the correct answer? The correct answer to give is “we have no contentment.” If there is indeed contentment, we would never say that we are not satisfied with this or that. We cannot satisfy ourselves due to conflict between our insatiable selfish desire and the law of impermanence. That’s why; the Buddha advised us that “Contentment is the highest wealth.”  A wealthy man is not a rich man. A wealthy man is in perpetual fear of his life.  He cannot go out without a security guard and he cannot sleep without fear and worry because of his properties. Contented person is indeed a very lucky because his mind is free from all those disturbances. So, he is indeed rich person.
As a conclusion, I would like to say that when we maintain this contentment, jealousy can never cloud our mind and thereby we allow others also to enjoy their lives. If there is no jealousy, anger also cannot arise. If there is no anger, there will be no violence and bloodshed and everybody can then live peacefully.  Think about it! Let’s have Contentment!

Let’s live with Dhamma to be peaceful in our lives.
